Employers want to know what you have done to make a difference in the organizations you’ve worked for.  These statements provide proof of competencies, skills and strengths.  This is more effective than simply listing job responsibilities.  The most effective and most common way to create powerful accomplishment statements is the widely used PAR method.  This will provide a structure for you to remember, tell and write your achievements.

P…stands for a problem or situation or project you faced or took over.

A…stands for the action you took to solve the problem or situation.

R…stands for the result or outcome of your actions that benefited the organization.

Questions to Ask Yourself
Did you save the organization money? How much? ...Did you increase sales? How and by what percentage? ...Did you develop a new procedure? ...Did you train anyone? ...Did you do a job with fewer people in less time? ...Did you improve anything? ...Did you improve morale? How? Were you on any special committees? ... Did you receive any awards or special recognition?

A Simple Example

PROBLEM
Customer service at the computer help desk was below average because it was taking longer than usual to process customer information.

ACTION
Created new computer based intake forms to make the process faster.

RESULT
Decreased processing time by 25% resulting in a 5% increase in sales.

The above becomes:   “Improved customer service by creating new computer based forms,
decreasing processing time by 25% resulting in a 5% increase in sales.”

You resume will more likely get a second look by using these types of statements for each job you’ve held or at the beginning of the résumé where it is more likely to be seen.  You only have a few seconds to make an impression-make it a good one!
